As dawn breaks over Kianyaga, Kenya, these images illuminate the intertwined lives of those grappling with legal and societal challenges. The serene sunrise contrasts starkly with the struggles of small-scale farmers battling corrupt legal and bureaucratic systems, supported by the Elimu Impact Evaluation Centre.
Sara Moki’s fight for child support and Cicily Wariu’s quest to reclaim stolen land underscore systemic issues compounded by corruption. In scenes of daily life, from crowded taxis to schoolyards brimming with new opportunities, the impact of Elimu’s legal aid is palpable.
Morris Moreigi Josia and William Njagimbanya’s battles with fraudulent land deals and eviction orders reveal the personal cost of bureaucratic inefficiency. Yet, amidst these struggles, Elimu's support shines through in Isabella Wamunyu Kori’s health recovery and the joy of students benefiting from new educational resources.
This visual narrative captures the resilience of a community in the face of adversity, with Elimu’s aid serving as a beacon of hope and change.
Sunrise over Kianyaga, Kenya.
In this serene landscape, small-scale farmers make up most of the local population. Their primary legal challenges involve land ownership and succession, compounded by corruption within the Land Registry and the courts. Wealthier individuals can bypass obstacles through bribery, leaving poorer farmers with limited recourse. Even lawyers from the Elimu Impact Evaluation Centre, a Canadian organization studying the impact of legal aid on local development, struggle against a system plagued by bribery, lost paperwork, delays, and incompetence.
